Vol. 241 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Water Scheme.

30.

asked the Minister for Local Government when it is proposed to commence work on the Baltimore regional water scheme, County Cork.

Cork County Council's proposals for the Baltimore/Castletownshend water supply scheme are under consideration in my Department and I hope to issue a decision thereon shortly.

The people concerned would be very grateful to the Minister if he sanctioned work on this scheme. Is he aware that during the past year Baltimore has become a famous tourist resort as well as a sailing centre? During the last tourist season we had a number of tourists who had to go without water, and will the Minister give an undertaking that the scheme will be completed before next tourist season?

As I say, I hope to issue a decision shortly.

Is the Minister aware that the western committee of Cork County Council had to spend £3,000 last season to transport water from Skibbereen to this important tourist resort?
