Vol. 241 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rent of Flats.

35.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of complaints by flat dwellers of alleged exorbitant rents being charged; and if he has any proposals to amend the law to prevent overcharging in this regard and to ensure that rents paid for private flats are equitable.

A small number of complaints about high rents has been brought to my attention. In so far as the Rent Restrictions Acts apply, the tenants being overcharged have, of course, a legal remedy. Otherwise the amount of the rent is a matter for agreement between the parties. The scope of rental control came under review as recently as 1967 during the debates on the Bill of the 1967 Rent Act. I have at present no proposals for legislation to extend rent control.
