Vol. 242 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bray Sea Front Development.

4.

andMr. Kavanagh asked the Minister for Local Government if his Department have any plans on hand concerning the redevelopment of the Bray sea front and environs with particular reference to the statements in the Report Tourism in Ireland East commissioned by the Eastern Regional Tourism Organisation that Bray contains swimming facilities which are totally inadequate, a derelict commercial harbour into which untreated sewage is discharged, many private enterprises with tasteless and decrepit appearances along the sea front and that the whole town and its environs need a piece of thorough physical planning.

The primary responsibility for the physical planning and development of Bray rests with the local planning authority. The revised draft development plan for Bray which was adopted by the planning authority last August and which is at present on public display in Bray sets out their policies and objectives for the future of the town. The plan envisages the improvement and development of Bray as a seaside resort while at the same time preserving the special identity of the town.

Specific objectives in the plan include the improvement of swimming facilities and the development and improvement of the harbour area, with the assistance of Bord Fáilte, to make it attractive to both residents and visitors. A major sewerage scheme for the Bray area, which is being undertaken in co-operation with Wicklow County Council and which was approved by me, is at present in hands. As a temporary measure, this scheme will provide for the discharge of sewage clear of the harbour; in the longer term, it is proposed to construct a sea outfall.

Could the Minister say if there is also a water supply scheme in his Department for the Bray area of Wicklow?

I am not aware of that.

It will be a peculiar situation if they have sewerage without water.

They have water.

They will not have water for the area the sewerage is covering.

They may need more water but I have no knowledge of any proposals in that regard.
