Vol. 242 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Theft of Motor Vehicles.

15.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state in respect of each of the last three years the number of motor vehicles (a) stolen and (b) where stolen recovered; and if it is proposed to take steps to improve the rate of detection of this type of offence and to increase the number of vehicles recovered.

I assume that the Deputy intends the question to include motor vehicles taken without the owners' consent.

The statistics sought are not recorded in full at Garda Headquarters and could not be compiled in the time available. I am giving in a tabular statement the statistics that are available and, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, the statement will be included in the Official Report.

The Garda Síochána are, of course, constantly endeavouring to improve the rate of detection for this type of offence but I am sure the Deputy appreciates the difficulties of detection in a case where a car or motor cycle is taken for a joy-ride and abandoned perhaps an hour or two later. This is particularly so in relation to motor cycles, which of course are included in the figures given.

Following is the statement:
