Vol. 242 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Compensation Claims against Federal Nigerian Government

28.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if the Federal Nigerian Government have been asked for compensation for loss of life or damage to property in the territory over which they claim jurisdiction which affects Irish nationals.

My Department has not been asked to make any claim for compensation in respect of such incidents to the Nigerian Government.

Why not? Is it not usual to make a claim for compensation when an Irish national is killed?

We have not been asked to make a claim by the people concerned.

Would the Minister be prepared to make representations if he were asked?

It would have to be considered whether or not it could be presented to the Nigerian Government under international law. It is not for me to take the initiative in this matter.
