Vol. 242 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers (Resumed). - Stamping of Pottery.

67.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the Pottery Adaptation Council made application to the Merchandise Marks Commission to have the name of the country of origin, such as export markets require of Irish wares, stamped on all pottery entering the country; whether instead of complying with the request of the Pottery Adaptation Council and the Merchandise Marks Commission, he insists that such marking of origin on imported pottery be stamped bilingually in Irish and English; and whether in view of the difficulty of having such marking impressed in Irish on foreign imports from countries where the Irish language is unknown, he will take immediate steps to implement the recommendations of the two bodies above named.

The application to which the question relates was referred by the Government to the Merchandise Marks Commission, who recommended a restriction order for imported ceramic ware. The order was made by the Government on 15th July, 1969. When an indication of origin is considered necessary for imported goods, the Government must reserve the right to decide that either or both of the official languages of the country should be used. I would not accept that the order creates serious difficulties for foreign manufacturers wishing to send ceramic ware to this country.
