Vol. 242 No. 6

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers (Resumed). - Kerry Firms.

68.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the total amount invested by the State by way of extra grants and loans to a firm (name supplied) in Cahirciveen, Waterville, County Kerry, and the details thereof.

The total amount paid by way of grants to Rainbow Limited is £101,800 made up of £26,800 for the mink farm, and £75,000 for the trout farm. I have no function in regard to any loans obtained by the company.

69.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will institute an inquiry into the affairs of a firm (name supplied) in Cahirciveen in view of the fact that the State invested in same.

I understand that the sale of the factory assets to a new owner has recently been completed and that the new owner is engaged in discussions locally with a view to the recommencement of certain operations which had ceased. I see no reason, therefore, for instituting an inquiry into the affairs of the firm.

Is the Minister aware that the factory has closed down and that the men who worked there were told to take their cards and to hit the road? In view of the amount of grants put into that project, surely the Government should have seen that these men got at least 14 days' notice?

I am aware that negotiations are going on about this project in order to get the operation going again. The Deputy will agree that this is what we all want and this was why the grants were made available by the Government in the first place.
