Vol. 242 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Social Welfare Recipients.

34.

andMr. G. Lynch asked the Minister for Social Welfare if in view of the continuous increase in the cost of living he will arrange to have a bonus payment in respect of the week previous to Christmas made to recipients of social welfare pensions and benefits.

In accordance with the provisions of the Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1969, increases in social assistance payments came into operation from the beginning of August last and increases in social insurance payments will come into effect from the beginning of January next. The percentage increases in the principal rates of payments exceed the increase in living costs reflected by the consumer price index. In the circumstances it is not proposed to introduce legislation to provide for extra social welfare payments at Christmas.
