Ceisteann—Questions. Oral Answers. - Anglo-Irish Economic Committee.

1.

asked the Taoiseach the results of the recent discussions by the Anglo-Irish Economic Committee.

Deputies will have seen the text of the statement issued following the meeting on Thursday and Friday last at the level of officials of the Anglo-Irish Economic Committee. As indicated in the statement, the committee reviewed the operation of the Free Trade Area Agreement in relation both to industry and agriculture and the economic and financial policies of the two countries, and also exchanged views on agricultural production and marketing policies. The British Government's recent decision to extend the import deposit scheme was the subject of special consideration. There was also a discussion on the applications of the two countries for membership of the European Communities. The meeting is to be followed shortly by a meeting at ministerial level.

Will the Taoiseach state if the present position as the Anglo-Irish Free Trade Area Agreement affects us was pointed out and its adverse effects on us stressed?

The delegation cannot be expected to point out everything the Deputy has in mind. These talks are still continuing. They will be resumed at ministerial level in a few days.

We shall be in bankruptcy by the time these talks are concluded.
