Vol. 242 No. 9

Ceisteann—Questions. Oral Answers. - 1916 Commemoration Medals.

101.

asked the Minister for Defence (a) the number of 1916 Golden Jubilee commemorative medals struck, (b) the number distributed, (c) the number left over and (d) the reason they were not distributed.

The number of 1916 jubilee commemorative medals struck was 968, of which 964 were distributed to survivors of the 1916 Rising who were holders of the 1916 medal. Every known eligible person has received the commemorative medal.

Is the Minister aware that a Mrs. O'Brien from Athlone was an active member of Cumann na mBan during the struggle for independence? Is he also aware that she got an invitation, which she accepted, to attend for the presentation of a medal? She was told the medal had been struck. She died a few days before the day of presentation. Would the Minister not consider giving the medal struck for this lady to her relatives?

If the Deputy will give me the particulars——

I will do that.

The Wolfe Tone Cumann in Athlone!

She is one of yours.

I am suspicious, I shall have to investigate this very carefully.
