Vol. 242 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - CIE Employment Policy.

63.

asked the Minister for a Transport and Power whether CIE as a matter of policy refuse to give employment to any person who has been committed at any stage of his life to prison.

I have been informed by CIE that the fact that an applicant for employment has been committed at some stage of his life to prison does not of itself debar him from being considered for employment. In considering an applicant for employment all relevant factors are taken into consideration by the board, bearing in mind the vacancy for which he has applied.

If that were true it would be a very cruel and savage policy.

Since Deputy Dr. Byrne put down the question I have had this particular aspect investigated and I agree with Deputy Dr. O'Donovan.
