Vol. 243 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imprisonment of Rudolf Hess.

40.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if the Irish Government's views concerning the continued imprisonment of Rudolf Hess have been communicated to the authorities responsible for his imprisonment; if so, when; and what was the nature of the reply received.

There is no record of any such views on the subject ever having been communicated to the authorities responsible.

Would the Minister not consider recommending to the Government that they make their views known?

I think I have already explained to the Dáil that the great Powers are concerned in this. The USSR will not agree to representation from any other great Powers. Britain has recently tried to have this man released and I do not see any prospect of our having any influence on the situation.

While I know what the Minister is saying is true, the question I asked him is if he would advise the Four Powers of the attitude of this country?

I have considered doing this but I do not think we will have such influence in the matter.
