Vol. 243 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Retirement Training.

48.

asked the Minister for Finance if, having regard to the many problems which face people on retirement and the very large number of people who are compulsorily retired out of the public service, he will set up a scheme to train public servants for retirement, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

While I am sympathetic towards the problems referred to by the Deputy, remedial action would clearly have to extend to persons in similar circumstances outside the Civil Service. Taking into account our available resources and the many projects already in hands for the betterment of the community, I am not in a position to provide funds for such a purpose.

The Minister for Health has already indicated his sympathetic approval for such a project? Would the Minister not consider it to be a good example to other sectors of our community that as the State is the principal agency for compulsory retirement, it should introduce a system of preparing people for retirement in an age when it would appear people are more likely to live longer and unless properly trained for retirement they will become not only a burden on themselves but a burden on the community?

We are concentrating most of our efforts on trying to train them for the work they have to do during their careers.
