Vol. 243 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Training for Retirement.

68.

asked the Minister for Labour whether there are any schemes in operation under the aegis of his Department to train people for retirement; if so, if he will give details; and, if not, if he will take steps to implement a scheme and encourage employers to do likewise.

The answer to the first part of the question is "No".

I am keeping this general question under review.

Having regard to the fact that man is more likely than ever before to spend as much as 25 per cent of his life span in retirement, would the Minister consider treating this as a matter of urgency because if not, the humanitarian problems will multiply and the financial cost will escalate?

The concept of training for retirement is entirely new and has not made much progress yet anywhere. The Dublin Institute of Adult Education had a seminar last year at which my predecessor spoke and there are signs of new developments in regard to this type of training.

We should try to lead the way on some occasions, not follow the rest.
