Vol. 243 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Kiosks.

113.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when it is proposed to erect a telephone kiosk at the new corporation housing estate in Togher, Cork.

Arrangements have already been made to provide a kiosk which will serve the estate in question within the next few months.

114.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will provide a telephone kiosk at Lotabeg Terrace, Mayfield, Cork, for the convenience of local residents.

The area in question is regarded as adequately served by a kiosk at Columcille Avenue and a further installation would not be warranted.

Is the Minister aware that there is a population in this part of Mayfield of about 800 people and would he look into the feasibility of providing a kiosk in this area?

My information does not indicate that. It appears this is a developing area and in due course the necessity for a coinbox there might be justified. At the present time in relation to the demand for kiosks I do not think this particular area qualifies for the provision of this service.

Is the Minister aware that 60 families have come to live in this area within the last couple of weeks and that 60 more will probably be coming in the present month? Therefore, would he not look into the feasibility of providing this kiosk?

Thanks to Fianna Fáil.

The position is that there is a kiosk less than——

(Interruptions.)

The Minister is in possession in answering the Question.

I was endeavouring to point out to the Deputy that, in fact, there is a kiosk at the moment less than three furlongs from Lotabeg Terrace on the corner of Columcille Avenue and Kerry Lane but it is little used and the receipts are only sufficient to cover the annual costs. If usage of that kiosk became sufficient to indicate there appeared to be greater demand in that area then we would be justified in re-investigating. However, when we have a kiosk such a short distance from the area to which the Deputy is referring and it is not sufficiently used, a case does not seem to exist for the provision of this kiosk.
