Vol. 243 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Accidents.

58.

asked the Minister for Local Government if in view of the increasing death rate in road traffic accidents he will examine existing legislation in order to ascertain if any changes are considered desirable with a view to ensuring greater road and vehicle safety.

Road traffic legislation is subject to continuing review. The Deputy can rest assured that any changes in legislation considered necessary in the light of developments affecting traffic will be made. However, I am satisfied that existing road traffic legislation is adequate to meet the present demands of road and vehicle safety. The Road Traffic Acts, 1961 and 1968, contain comprehensive provisions on driver behaviour and fitness and vehicle fitness and they are being implemented by regulations with all possible expedition.

The Deputy will appreciate that, while it is vital to secure that the necessary legislation and regulations are there, it is just as necessary to ensure they are complied with. My Department conducts a sustained propaganda effort to that effect.
