Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waterford Firm Lay-Off

51.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the impending laying-off of 120 employees by a Waterford firm (name supplied); if so, if he has taken steps to remedy the situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that employees of the firm in question are to be laid off but I understand that the number involved may prove to be slightly less than the figure of 120 mentioned by the Deputy. This step is a consequence of unfavourable developments in the British market quite outside the firm's control which have also affected the firm's British competitors in that market. While my Department will keep in close touch with the situation, there is no action open to me which would remedy the situation, arising as it does from external marketing conditions.
