Vol. 243 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions, Oral Answers. - County Dublin Lighting.

30.

asked the Minister for Local Government what steps are being taken by Dublin County Council to improve the poor standard of lighting in County Dublin.

There are no proposals from the council before my Department at present. I understand, however, that the council recently adopted a report which provides for a comprehensive programme of improvements in public lighting.

Is the Minister aware that part of the 1967-68 public lighting programme has not yet been implemented by Dublin County Council and that Dublin County Council state it is quite impossible to implement this programme in view of the kind of co-operation they are receiving from the ESB? There are large areas in County Dublin in complete and utter darkness. This is a danger to the children and to the women there and even to the motorists in the area. Would the Minister consider taking serious steps in the matter?

This work in the Dublin County Council area is carried out by the ESB under contract. I am afraid there is nothing I can do to iron out any difficulties that may arise there. If the county council cannot satisfactorily perform this work, through the ESB, I have not any control in the matter.

Could the Minister not ask the ESB to co-operate with the county council?

I shall take up the matter with the ESB.

Question No. 31 postponed.
