Vol. 243 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions, Oral Answers. - County Tipperary Schools.

68.

asked the Minister for Education the total cost of the new school at Knockavilla, Dundrum, County Tipperary; and if the cost of the additional two rooms will add to the local contribution or be borne by his Department as these rooms are for children from a local orphanage.

Agreement had been reached between my Department and the Reverend Manager as to the proportion of the cost of the proposed new Knockavilla National School that would be met by local contribution, before it was decided to cater for pupils from the local industrial school in the new building. The additional accommodation now to be provided in the new school will result in better educational facilities for all those attending the school. Nevertheless, consideration is being given to making such adjustment in the proportion of the cost to be met by local contribution that the actual amount to be paid from local sources will vary very little from the amount originally agreed.

69.

asked the Minister for Education when it is proposed to start the building of the extra classrooms at Golden National School. County Tipperary.

The arrangements for the enlargement of Golden National School are as yet only in their preliminary stages and further information as to the future trend of the primary school-going population in the district is required in order that a decision can be taken as to the type and extent of additional accommodation to be provided. I am not yet in a position, therefore, to say when building work on the extension to the school will commence, but no avoidable delay will occur in bringing the arrangements to a conclusion.
