Vol. 243 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions, Oral Answers. - Matriculation Examination.

80.

asked the Minister for Education if he will make a statement on his Department's recent discussions with the National University of Ireland on the acceptance of certain subjects for matriculation purposes.

Representatives of school associations concerned with post-primary education took part with officers of my Department in a recent discussion with representatives of the National University of Ireland on the acceptance of certain subjects for matriculation. I cannot say more at this stage than that proposals which were put forward during this discussion are being further examined by the university authorities.

I fully accept the Minister's difficulty, but this is the last opportunity the House will get until next February to question him on this issue. Can he not give us a progress report on issues which affect school children already involved in their final years?

I am afraid I cannot in this particular instance but, as soon as I have a definite decision, I will make it public.
