Vol. 244 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Stamp Duty.

46.

asked the Minister for Finance whether any consideration has been given to abolishing stamp duty on cheques and receipts; and whether he will indicate the yield to revenue for any one year from this source.

There is no stamp duty on receipts. This duty was abolished in 1961.

As to the abolition of the stamp duty chargeable on cheques, this is primarily a budgetary matter and the Deputy will appreciate that I cannot indicate in advance what proposals the Budget statement may or may not contain.

In the year ended 31st March, 1969, the revenue yield from stamp duty on cheques amounted to £524,000.
