Vol. 244 No. 8

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Schools.

113.

asked the Minister for Education what progress has been made regarding the provision of a new national school at Leitrim, Loughrea, County Galway; and if a central site has been selected for the school.

It is proposed to have a new central school erected at Leitrim to replace the existing school at that location and, also, to provide for the amalgamation of Kilcooley National School with Leitrim.

The original site offered by the manager was unsuitable and a report is awaited from the Commissioners of Public Works as to the suitability of an alternative site. When this report becomes available, my Department will communicate with the manager with a view to having the arrangements for the erection of the building carried out with the least possible delay.

114.

asked the Minister for Education the position regarding plans for a new national school at Kilmadeema, Loughrea, County Galway.

It is the long-term proposal of my Department that a new central school should be erected at Kilmadeema to cater for the Kilmadeema and Aille national school districts.

In the meantime a grant has been sanctioned by my Department for the improvement, and pre-fabricated extension, of the existing Kilmadeema school in order to cater for the early amalgamation of the schools. I understand that the Commissioners of Public Works will shortly furnish the manager with sketch plans to enable him to apply for planning permission from Galway County Council. When the permission is obtained, the commissioners will be in a position to invite tenders for the scheme.
