Vol. 244 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Television and Radio Licences.

139.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if it is proposed to increase television and radio licence fees in the near future.

140.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs why he has under consideration questions of increasing licence fees in respect of television and radio sets, having regard to the fact that the standard of programmes is declining; and if he will refuse to impose further increased charges on the holders of such licences.

141.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if any consideration has been given to increasing the radio and television licence fees; and, if so, if he will make a statement on the matter.

142.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if it is proposed to again raise the licence fee in respect of radio and television; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 139, 140, 141 and 142 together.

A decision has not yet been reached on the application made to me by the Broadcasting Authority for an increase in licence fees. The application, which is based on the need to meet increased operating and other costs, is still under examination. A public announcement will be made as soon as a decision is reached.

I cannot accept that the position is as stated in Question No. 140.
