Vol. 244 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Remains of Connaught Ranger.

38.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will make representations to secure the return to Ireland from India of the remains of Corporal James Daly late of the Connaught Rangers.

In response to representations received from time to time by or on behalf of the next-of-kin of Private James Joseph Daly, who was court-martialled and executed on 2nd November, 1920 for his part in the mutiny of the Connaught Rangers, the Government of India were approached and have agreed to the repatriation of his remains. Subject to the further wishes of the next-of-kin and in consultation with interested voluntary organisations, it is envisaged that the repatriation arrangements will be made through the embassy at New Delhi.

Is the Minister aware that it is the wish of relatives that the remains be brought back by the National Graves Association and is that organisation to undertake this task?

This is one of the voluntary organisations that I mentioned—the National Graves Association and the Federation of Old IRA.

Were the Connaught Rangers also in the IRA?

These people are interested but the main people who will be consulted are the next-of-kin and, if they wish, the cost would be borne by the State from India to Dublin.

The National Graves Association is fully consulted on this whole matter?

Yes, it is intended to be fully consulted.
