andMr. Timmins asked the Minister for Finance the amount of interest paid on foreign borrowings exclusive of Marshall aid in each of the last five years.

The interest paid on foreign borrowings exclusive of Marshall aid was nil in 1964-65 and in 1965-66. It was £0.6 million in 1966-67, £1.27 million in 1967-68 and £1.24 million in 1968-69.

andMr. Timmins asked the Minister for Finance what proportion of the foreign exchange reserves is at present mortgaged to repay moneys borrowed outside the State, exclusive of the amount applicable in respect of Marshall aid.

No portion of our external reserves is mortgaged. The amount of external Exchequer borrowings, exclusive of Marshall Aid borrowing, at present outstanding is £35.1m. Future external earnings will be available to service this debt.
