Vol. 244 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Aircraft Landing Charges.

60.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether his attention has been drawn to a recent statement by Mr. Michael Dargan of Aer Lingus regarding the high cost of airport landing charges in this country; whether he proposes to take any steps to have these charges reduced by Aer Rianta; and, if not, why.

Airport landing charges are fixed by me. I am aware of a recent statement made by the general manager of Aer Lingus about the cost of landing charges at the airports. Landing fees at Dublin and Shannon Airports were increased in April, 1969, for the first time since 1958. The increase was essential in view of rising operational costs and increased financial charges to service the heavy capital expenditure involved in the expansion and equipment of the airports necessitated by traffic development and changing aircraft types. In the circumstances, I do not propose to reduce the charges.

Is any reduction in landing fees given to Aer Lingus?

No, we must abide by IATA regulations and international agreements in this respect. No national airport can differentiate between the different airlines. This does not happen anywhere in the world.
