Vol. 244 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Damage by Aircraft.

61.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will consider the possibility of the provision of compensation for householders in the vicinity of Dublin Airport whose property, particularly windows, is damaged by low flying aircraft.

I am not aware that damage has been caused to property in the vicinity of Dublin Airport by low flying aircraft. If such damage were in fact to occur, any claim in respect of it would be a matter between the aggrieved party and the operator or owner of the aircraft concerned.

In view of the damage done to the windows and houses in the vicinity of Dublin Airport would the Minister issue a direction to the airport authorities stating that after takeoff aircraft should turn out over the countryside instead of coming back in over the city?

People have their rights in this matter. In fact, I am informed by Aer Lingus that they have not received any such complaints. If the Deputy gives me particulars I will take up the matter with Aer Lingus.

It is known that when aircraft take off in a south westerly direction and turn over the city they cause a lot of inconvenience and damage, apart from the noise they create, in the Finglas East and Ballymun areas. Would it not be possible to direct aircraft, particularly training flights, out over the countryside instead of over the city? It is as easy to turn to the right as it is to turn to the left.

If the Deputy furnishes me with precise particulars of damage caused to property I will take the matter up with Aer Lingus immediately.
