54.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will provide the necessary moneys to complete the recommendations of the Tramore Resort Plan without interruption; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

With your permission a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 52, 53 and 54 together.

The administration of the major resort development scheme is a function of Bord Fáilte and the question of the adoption, implementation and phasing of the Tramore Resort plan or any variant of it is a matter for the board of Tramore Fáilte in consultation with Bord Fáilte. Funds for the promotion of tourism have been provided on an ever increasing scale for a number of years. Of necessity priority has been given to promotional and marketing work and the development of holiday accommodation. In the circumstances, the funds available for resort development have had to be restricted and Bord Fáil accordingly found it necessary to draw up a list of priorities to ensure the programmed development of resorts coming within the scope of the scheme and the avoidance of wasteful expenditure. Apart from finance, other factors influencing the priorities include such items as the stage to which plans have been developed and the availability of local contributions towards the works.

I am fully aware of the situation at Tramore and, indeed, at the other resorts and as recently as 20th February last I received a deputation from Tramore Fáilte to discuss their problems. There is no question of funds earmarked for Tramore being diverted to another resort and indeed Bord Fáilte hope to spend at the resort during the coming year about £50,000 on site development work, an integral and essential part of the plan. This will bring the total spent by Bord Fáilte on Tramore Fáilte projects to £250,000 and an overall total of £300,000 for resort works at Tramore.
