Vol. 245 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Unemployment Assistance Recipients.

10.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether he will expedite a favourable decision in respect of the application of 25 recipients of unemployment assistance in the Kilcummin district of County Kerry, which is between four and seven miles from Killarney, to have a signing centre established in Kilcummin, where the local sub-postmistress is prepared to certify the signatures; and what is the present position in the matter.

I expect the examination of this matter to be completed very shortly and the Deputy will of course be advised of the outcome.

11.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether he is aware that the signing centre for recipients of unemployment assistance in Scartaglin, County Kerry has been closed; and if, in view of the fact that the recipients in this district must now travel an additional six miles to have their signatures certified, he will make arrangements immediately to have the signatures verified by the sub-postmaster in Scartaglin who is prepared to do so.

Closure of the signing centre in question has not been authorised by my Department. I understand, however, that unemployed persons from townlands not in the police sub-district of Castleisland who have been attending at Scartaglin have very recently been instructed by the Gardaí to attend instead at the signing centre for their own police sub-district.

I am having the situation specially investigated and will let the Deputy know the outcome at an early date.
