Vol. 245 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Child Health Services.

3.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware of the shortage of doctors for the child health services; and if he is satisfied that the salaries being offered to these doctors are sufficiently attractive.

The number of assistant chief medical officers at present employed is short of the number of approved posts by four and of the number of posts which the Child Health Report estimated might be required to implement an improved child health service by eighteen. The Local Appointments Commission is conducting a competition to fill four posts and I will shortly be asking health authorities to review their medical staffing requirements in the light of the four-year programme for the child health services and to create additional posts where necessary.

The remuneration of the medical staff of health authorities is determined under an agreed scheme of conciliation and arbitration. My only function is to accord or withhold approval of settlements arrived at under the scheme.
