Vol. 247 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Luminous Telephone Dials.

105.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will introduce luminous numbers on the dials of telephones, particularly in public call kiosks.

I am not satisfied that there is a need for luminous numbers on telephone dials and I do not propose to introduce them.

Has there been any demand for these luminous dial telephones?

None whatsoever.

May I put it to the Minister that it is extremely difficult to make a call from a public call office where the lights do not operate? Luminous dials are widespread on the Continent and are useful if one wishes to make a call at night from a dark call office, or from the bedside.

The Minister is awake every night now.

The luminous dial telephones are not in use to a wide extent in other countries. Their cost would be twice as much as for ordinary telephones. There are very few cases where the telephone kiosks are not lit.

There may be light bulbs in them but often they are not working.

If the bulbs are not working I am quite sure people would have no difficulty in dialling 100 or 999.
