If cheques drawn by members of the public were accepted as Post Office Savings Bank deposits, the amounts would remain with the commercial banks concerned until the banking dispute is settled. Meanwhile the savings bank would be liable for interest on, and cash repayments against, these deposits although the cheques would not have been cashed.
