Vol. 247 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cattle Health Check.

16.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries what health checks are made on cattle entering this country from the Six Counties, and from any foreign country; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Cattle entering the State from the Six Counties must be accompanied by a permit issued by the Ministry of Agriculture establishing their TB attested status. Such permits are not issued in respect of breeding stock which have failed to pass the brucellosis test. In the case of breeding animals going to herds in the brucellosis eradication areas positive evidence of having passed a brucellosis test must also be furnished.

Cattle from Britain and the continent are required to meet stringent veterinary requirements including tests for specific diseases prior to import. Al such cattle are quarantined immediately before export to this country As an additional precaution, cattle imported from the continent are subjected to a further period of quarantine and tc further health tests on arrival in this country.
