Vol. 247 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Stations Closing Hours.

49.

asked the Minister for Justice if it is the shortage of personnel that has given rise to the practice of closing some Garda stations at 5 o'clock in the evening until 10 a.m. the following morning; and if he is satisfied that this is not an undesirable practice.

The Commissioner has informed me that in consultation with local officers he has extended the arrangements which already existed in many stations throughout the country whereby certain stations are open to the public for limited periods only each day. The commissioner considers that these office hours will make more men available for more important outdoor duties while still enabling an adequate office service to be provided. The new arrangements will be subject to review in the light of experience.
