Vol. 247 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Taxi Plates.

51.

andMr. Dowling asked the Minister for Local Government if it is intended to introduce amending legislation to govern the issuing of taxi plates and to control the entry of personnel to the taxi service.

Following receipt on the 9th instant of a report by the committee which was established to assemble facts relating to the small public service vehicle business, I met a deputation representative of Dublin taxi interests on the 12th instant at the Deputies' request. I told the deputation that I had no power to restrict the number of public service vehicles to a specific level but that I proposed to amend existing regulations to provide that new licences would be issued at quarterly intervals. I made the amending regulations with effect from the 15th June. At this stage, I have no proposals to introduce new legislation under the road traffic code but I am examining the possibility that a more effective means of communication should be established between all the interests involved in the operation of small public service vehicles.
