Vol. 248 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

69.

asked the Minister for Local Government what proposals Kerry County Council have for the improvement of the Sneem water supply scheme which is now inadequate and where there will be a grave shortage during July and August, unless the supply is improved now.

There are no proposals before my Department in this matter and I understand that the local authority have no proposals in mind for the area at present.

70.

asked the Minister for Local Government what proposals Kerry County Council have for the improvement of the Kenmare water supply where there is a grave shortage at certain times daily and where the position will become acute when the tourist season reaches its peak during July and August.

Approval was given last February to the council's proposals for the Templenoe water supply scheme which will augment the Kenmare town supply.

71.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he proposes to approve of the water supply scheme for Tubbercurry and also the sewerage scheme for Tubbercurry, County Sligo.

Preliminary proposals for a water supply scheme and contracts documents for a sewerage scheme at Tubbercurry were approved on the 6th November, 1969, and the 1st May, 1970 respectively.

72.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will sanction proposals from Cork County Council (West) for the building of cottages and the provision of water and sewerage schemes.

I have approved plans recently for local authority housing schemes at Timoleague and Leap. Revised tender proposals for two rural cottages, and plans for two houses at Drinagh and for four prefabricated dwellings at Ballydehob, were submitted to my Department recently by the county council and are under examination. I will give my decision on them as soon as possible.

Water and sewerage schemes to the value of £1 million have been released for commencement in the Cork area over the past year. The consideration of proposals for other water and sewerage projects in the west Cork area would be facilitated by the submission by the local authority of an integrated priority list of such schemes.

73.

asked the Minister for Local Government when work on the Aghavine-Shanakiel, Ballymacoda, County Cork, group water scheme will be completed; and the reasons for the delay.

There has been no undue delay in dealing with this scheme, which originated as two small groups. Difficulty has been experienced in finding a suitable source of supply to serve this scheme but it is hoped that a well recently bored by Cork County Council will prove adequate. The well will be tested for yield and quality. The scheme has not yet been designed and I cannot say at this stage when it will be completed.

Is the Minister aware that a well was sunk in the area over two months ago and, to date, the people there who subscribed well over 12 months ago have no supply, and will he kindly expedite the matter?

I understand that an engineer has been engaged to design the scheme and it depends on the completion of the design and its subsequent submission to my Department.

If there is no water supply in the area where the pump is now sunk, will the Minister kindly arrange for an alternative site to be found?

For what?

For the pump. They have no water.

That is a separate Question.

They are boring for water. I cannot give the Deputy any more information.

74.

asked the Minister for Local Government when work on the East Ferry, Midleton, County Cork, group water scheme will be completed; and the reasons for the delay.

The scheme has not yet started because asbestos cement pipes, which will be used in the scheme, were not available during the cement strike. I understand that the pipes will be available in six to eight weeks time and the scheme may then proceed. I cannot say when the work will be completed.

75.

asked the Minister for Local Government when work on the Ballyphilip, Whitecross, County Cork, group water scheme will be completed and the reason for the delay.

Work on this scheme has not started because a suitable source of water has not yet been found. A borehole currently being provided by the county council may serve the scheme. In addition, the cash contributions have not been collected. In these circumstances I cannot say when the scheme will be completed.

76.

asked the Minister for Local Government what steps have been taken by Dublin Corporation to ensure an adequate water supply in the Finglas area.

I understand that work is now nearing completion on the laying of a watermain from Forest Little to Bonnybrook, which should considerably improve the supply position in the area mentioned.
