Vol. 248 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waterford Corporation Clerical Employees.

84.

asked the Minister for Local Government the total number of female clerical officers employed by Waterford Corporation; the number of such vacancies now current; and if he is aware that Waterford Corporation seems to confine all such vacancies to male applicants.

Details of the staffing position and staff vacancies in a local authority at any particular time are not available in my Department. I am not aware that Waterford Corporation have acted in the manner suggested by the Deputy. The qualifications which have been declared for the office of clerical officer do not enable local authorities to restrict their recruitment to males.

Would the Minister check to see if an advertisement by this local authority specifically indicated that only male applicants would be considered for the position because this is quite discriminatory?

I shall check the matter.
