Vol. 248 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Postal Delay.

93.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that the time taken for a letter posted in Paris to arrive in Dublin and vice versa, is five days; and if, in view of the fact that there is a daily air service between the two cities, he will take steps to remedy the position.

The answer to the first part of the question is "No." The daily air services to and from Paris are used to provide regular letter mail dispatches each week-day.

If the Deputy will let me have the cover of any letter which was delayed for five days, I will have inquiry made.

Is the Minister not aware that complaints have been made that letters addressed to officers of this House even from Government Departments in Paris have taken five days and longer to arrive and that letters posted here in Dublin to Paris have taken five days? Is he also aware that individual Members of the House who have occasion to write to relatives in Paris have experienced the same trouble? Would the Minister find out if the delay occurs at the airport in Paris or where it occurs? I understand our postal service deals with such letters immediately they come here. If it is true that there is this delay it is something that should not happen. Is the Minister further aware that business firms have complained that delay involved in ordering parts has caused unnecessary trouble in the running of business in this country?

I should like to assure the Deputy that I shall have this whole matter throughly examined and tests carried out if necessary.
