Vol. 248 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Airport Consignments.

36.

asked the Minister for Justice whether the gardaí were requested at any time in the past three months to investigate consignments reported lost, missing or stolen from cargo sheds at Dublin Airport; and, if so, (a) what these consignments were, (b) the dates on which they were reported missing, (c) the names and addresses of consignors and consignees, and (d) whether the gardaí were able to locate these consignments.

As a matter of principle I am not prepared to give information as to whether the gardaí were or were not requested to carry out particular investigations and, if they were, what the investigations disclosed. I should like to emphasise again that inquiries made by the gardaí in the course of their investigations are confidential.

Is the Minister aware that a consignment disappeared out of the sheds overnight and when the airport officers got in touch with the alleged exporters these exporters informed them that they had never heard of the people in Ireland, that they had not sent the consignment and they asked for full particulars so as to find out who was using their name? Will the Minister now inform the House—I think it is up to him to do so in view of what is happening there —of the number of consignments that did disappear or were allegedly taken out of the airport sheds over the past few years.

No such complaints were made to the gardaí at all.

Has the Minister investigated it?

The Minister should re-investigate what is going on.
