Vol. 248 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Redundant Workers.

36.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the current prospects of alternative employment for those declared redundant by a firm (name supplied).

The attraction of industry to Athlone continues to receive the urgent attention of the Industrial Development Authority which is at present in touch with a number of industrialists interested in Athlone as a location for new factories. I am hopeful that Athlone will be successful in attracting at least some of them, although of course I cannot guarantee the outcome of these contacts.

Would the Minister consult with his colleague, the Minister for Transport and Power, who said during the last general election that if that factory goes down two factories would replace it.

There are more than two in the pipeline.

Perhaps the Minister will now be able to say what two factories will replace it?

More than two.

What about the people who are unemployed?

I am looking after that.

The Minister is not looking after it and that is the reason these questions are before the House. The people are emigrating.

My colleague, the Minister for Transport and Power, is daily in contact with me.

He is not being very successful.

What about the workers?

It is on behalf of the workers that my colleague is in touch with me.

(Interruptions.)
