Vol. 248 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Courthouse.

89.

Mr. J. Lenehan

asked the Minister for Justice when it is proposed to have a new courthouse erected in Belmullet, County Mayo.

In accordance with section 3 of the Courthouses (Provision and Maintenance) Act, 1935 the responsibility for the provision of courthouse accommodation in Belmullet rests with the Mayo County Council. The county council have for some years been considering a proposal for the erection of new premises for local authority purposes which will include provision for courthouse accommodation; plans prepared by their architect have been the subject of correspondence with my Department. Difficulties arose, however, in connection with the purchase of the site selected and I understand that these have not been overcome.

No complaints have been received in my Department regarding the present accommodation used by the district court or the absence of circuit court sittings in Belmullet.
