Vol. 249 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Trading Cheques.

30.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the legislation under which firms may engage in issuing trading cheques or trading dockets; and what measures are taken to ensure that such businesses always stay within the law.

There is no direct legislative control on the issue of trading cheques at present. It is, however, one of a number of aspects of consumer protection which I am having examined in my Department at present to see what action, if any, is necessary.

The Minister will agree there is urgent need for this to be looked into and acted upon? Nearly a year ago his predecessor said that the matter was being attended to and action would be taken soon.

I spoke on this myself on the 18th June last in reply to a question by Deputy Corish and Deputy Cluskey. There are other aspects of consumer protection, such as stamp trading, that I have also asked my Department to look into with a view to introducing comprehensive legislation. This is one of the matters that needs to be considered.
