Vol. 249 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Institutions for Girls.

19.

asked the Minister for Education if he will inquire into the position of teenage girls admitted into institutions in view of the criticisms of placement in these institutions as outlined by the Report on Reformatory and Industrial Schools Systems, 1970, which states that some of these girls, being unaware of their rights, may remain in the institutions for long periods and that some, in fact, have remained in them all their lives.

The criticism referred to by the Deputy relates to girls entering certain convents by voluntary arrangement because they are considered to be uncontrollable or in moral danger. I have no function in such cases.
