Vol. 250 No. 3

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Leaving Certificate Course.

16.

asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the hardship to students who are mid-way through the leaving certificate course and who have taken biology and agricultural science, he will postpone the implementation of the new regulations whereby those subjects cannot be taken at the same time.

Where there is a substantial overlap in the syllabus content of two examination subjects candidates for the certificate examinations are not normally allowed to take both subjects. There is a very substantial overlap between the syllabus for agricultural science and that for biology.

However, as this is a transition year in the matter of the introduction of the new syllabuses I have decided in respect of the leaving certificate examination 1971 that candidates may present the two subjects biology and agricultural science at that examination

Would the Minister not agree that when changes of this nature are made in the regulations for the leaving certificate courses, they should apply only to students commencing the course and not to those who are mid-way through the course?

That is the decision I have made here now.
