Vol. 250 No. 3

Ceisteanna-Questions. Oral Answers. - Partition Talks.

3.

asked the Taoiseach if he has any plans in the near future for tripartite talks with the Prime Ministers of Northern Ireland and Britain on the question of Partition.

There are no such plans.

The immediate matter in hand is to ensure both that the minority in the north can feel certain of fair treatment in the north and that the majority in the north can feel assured of fair treatment in a united Ireland.

In the meantime the British Prime Minister and I have agreed to meet each other to discuss matters of mutual interest next year.

Would the Taoiseach not think initiative might come from him to have this? Would it not be a good idea for him to take the initiative and to suggest talks?

That could well be. I do not think the time is appropriate.

Has the Taoiseach ever met the Northern Premier?

Yes, but not in his capacity of Prime Minister.

Not since he became Prime Minister?
