Vol. 250 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Soft Fruits.

143.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware that it has proved consistently difficult to find markets for certain soft fruits produced here; and if he has any remedial measures in mind.

I am aware that, in 1969 and 1970, which were good years for soft fruits, some growers, particularly those without contracts from processors had difficulty in marketing their crops. Advice to growers on market demand and prospects is available from my Department and from the horticultural officers employed by county committees of agriculture.

Is the Minister aware that there is a certain lack of coordination in the advice being given in different counties? Will he take steps to ensure that this advice is given on the basis of better national information?

I accept that there is a certain lack of coordination in the liaison between the various parties involved in the soft fruit business. Some means ought to be sought and, in fact, is being sought to resolve this problem.

Is the Minister prepared to do anything specific about gooseberries and blackcurrants which have been particularly bad?

We are having the matter examined at present—not specifically the fruits referred to by the Deputy but the whole soft fruit business.
