Vol. 250 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment in Firm.

166.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is now in a position to state when a firm (name supplied) will be in a position as a result of the efforts of his Department to re-employ all the workers who have been let go recently; and if he is in a position to make a statement as to what progress has been made since he last received a deputation which was representative of the workers, trade union, management and local representatives.

As I explained in reply to a question last month, this firm's difficulties are due to a cyclic recession in the British market which it supplies and an upturn in trade is not foreseen before next spring.

My Department and the Industrial Development Authority are continuing to seek other solutions to the problems created by this situation. Some prospects for new industrial development are being followed up, but it is not yet possible to say what the outcome may be.

I imagine that reply refers to Mountmellick. Is the Minister in a position to say when he will be able to provide an industry for Mountmellick because this town is dependent on this firm? When will he be able to provide more jobs for the people in the town?

I have just explained the position. Let me say in defence of the other very profitable and energetic businesses in Mountmellick that it would be wrong if I were to allow it to pass that Mountmellick town is dependent on this industry. It would be a reflection on those other industries if I were to allow that allegation to pass without defending all those other industries.

The Minister still did not answer my supplementary.

As stated in reply to the question.
