Vol. 250 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Proposed Japanese Factories.

169.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, after consideration, he is now in a position to reveal any information concerning the proposed five new Japanese factories to be set up in this country as a result of his recent visit to Japan; if, in view of the special circumstances at Clara, County Offaly, and the fact that Clara is now an undeveloped area, he will direct at least two of these factories to be set up in the town in order to provide employment to some hundreds of workers; the extent of employment to be given by each of these factories; and what developments have since taken place in this regard since his last reply in the matter.

I am not yet in a position to release detailed information on the Japanese and American proposals which arose as a result of my visit to Japan and the USA. Negotiations are still proceeding on all of these proposals and, as I am sure the Deputy appreciates, premature disclosure of information on the projects could seriously prejudice the negotiations. Clara would not meet the particular requirements of some of these projects but the Industrial Development Authority is bringing the designation of Clara to the notice of the other promoters involved. Negotiations are already in progress with a number of industrialists to locate new industries in Clara and I shall be glad to make an announcement when these negotiations have been satisfactorily completed.
