Vol. 250 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Batmen Orderlies.

194.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state in relation to those members of the Defence Forces engaged in duties as orderlies in the homes of married officers (a) the nature of the duties being performed, (b) by what authority, whether Defence Force Regulation or otherwise, these men have been ordered to perform these duties and (c) if he will direct that the practice cease.

Broadly, orderlies are allotted to married officers in occupation of public quarters for the purpose of maintaining these quarters, as well as the officers' equipment and uniform, in proper condition.

Defence Force Regulations provide for the allocation of batmen orderlies to the married officers in question. The answer to (c) is "no".
