Vol. 250 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Army Peace-Keeping Force.

196.

asked the Minister for Defence the cost of the Irish Army peace-keeping force; and the contribution from the United Nations towards this cost.

200.

asked the Minister for Defence the annual cost to the Exchequer of maintaining the Irish/UN contingent in Cyprus.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 196 and 200 together.

The underlying principle regarding the costs of maintaining an Irish contingent with the United Nations Peace-Keeping Force in Cyprus is that the Department's extra and extraordinary expenses are recoverable from the United Nations. The net position, therefore, is that the cost of normal pay and allowances is borne by public funds.

Claims made on the United Nations to date in respect of the Cyprus mission amount to £2,572,115 Is 10d and of this £2,162,004 9s 3d has been paid leaving a balance outstanding of £410,110 12s 7d.
